Blueterm®
Blueterm® is a unique patented formulation intended for the treatment of open or semi-closed industrial cooling water circuits supplied with sea, fresh or brackish water. The product makes it possible to effectively counteract the development of micro and macro biofouling (oysters, mussels, barnacles, hydras, etc.).
The reduction of biofilm and sludge generated by macro biofouling reduces the phenomenon of bio-corrosion and thus industrial maintenance.
Blueterm® is an organic formulation dissolved in water. It is a combination of a "long chain aliphatic amine" with a "highly specific exopolysaccharide" (EPS). The synergistic effect makes the treatment extremely efficient compared to traditional methods and contains no oxidizing components.
The amine penetrates into the biological membranes and the biofilm. This integration disrupts the cohesion of the biological structure and leads to destruction of the membranes. For micro-organisms this is lethal for macro-organisms (mussels) the treatment causes a state of stress sufficient to prevent their final settlement. At the right concentrations and duration, it is ultimately lethal for macro organisms (barnacles, hydras, ...).
The EPS acts as a surfactant that helps the toxic compound to get to place where the problems arise. This means that it is not necessary to treat the entire water flow, but only the surfaces of the system. This can result in significant chemistry reduction and the chemistry still in use is readily biodegradable. This reduction can affect the entire supply chain and thus contribute to multiple SDGs.
Case Study - Open cooling water circuit
bulk bleach - 75,000 m3/hour sea water - injection 240 days a year
Supply chain effect of this reduction
CHEMISTRY REDUCTION >95%
Raw materials
Production
Logistics
Handling
Drinking water savings of more than 2.1 million liter as raw material for chlorine bleach
Electricity savings of more than 1,750 MW to generate chlorine
More than 120 fewer bulk transports by road
Much less risk on site with unloading, storage and other handling
At least 0.2 ppm active chlorine is required in the water to be effective against micro and macro fouling.
Since chlorine is very reactive, it also disappears very quickly and at least 1.8 ppm of active chlorine must be injected.
To achieve this, the following volume of product is required:
Chlorine Bleach 15% 12 ppm
Pulse injection 12 hours/day 10,800 l/day
2,592,000 l/year
Blueterm® product is already effective from 3 ppm for half an hour a day to 6 ppm an hour a day, assuming maximum concentration the following volume of product is required:
Blueterm® 6 ppm
Shock dose 1 hour/day 450 l/day
108,000 l/year
The above case study is based on an open cooling water system at a power plant where bleach is purchased in bulk. In the case of large industrial systems of this type, chlorine is also frequently produced on site.
In that case, a possible chemical reduction does not affect the entire supply chain. But when producing chlorine on site, large amounts of process water and energy are used, where the necessary reduction can then be achieved. In addition, the production of chlorine on site is not without risk and requires the necessary maintenance and permits.
There are also regions where the use of chemicals is not allowed at all. Thermo shock is often used here in combination with taprogge. In this case there is of course no chemical reduction to be achieved, but this system is also not free of charge. Heating the cooling water costs energy that cannot be sold in the case of, for example, a power plant.
Blueterm® can be used in all kinds of cooling water circuits as antifouling, where chemicals are used or not, in large or small systems. We are therefore looking for companies that would like to conduct a case study with us on the various systems available on the market.
